A classic introduction to the delights of Mexico on this sample two-week Mexico holiday from Mexico City to the Caribbean coast, revealing the legacy of Aztec and Mayan civilisations and the Spanish colonial influences on today’s Mexican society.
Highlights: Mexico City – Oaxaca – Palenque – Uxmal – Chichen Itza – Riviera Maya
Your itinerary starts with the first few days in Mexico City. Airport-hotel transfers are included together with a city tour which includes a visit to the important Anthropology Museum and an excursion to Guadalupe and to the Aztec site of Teotihuacan. There is plenty of time for you to explore the markets, museums, galleries, squares and parks in your own time and discover restaurants, bars and cafes of the Zona Rosa. If you would like us to book additional excursions or activities, please let us know.
Oaxaca is a graceful combination of the modern, the colonial and the ancient. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. We include a visit to the Monte Alban archaeological site, the capital of the Zapotecs, on a nearby hilltop with commanding views of the surrounding valley and to the ruins at Mitla, with a stop en route at El Tule to see what is reputedly the world's largest tree, said to be around 2,000 years old.
The complex of Palenque is arguably the most beautiful of all the pre-Colombian structures in Latin America. The asymmetrical Palace at the centre was probably used as an astronomical observatory as well as a watchtower.
A guided tour of the Mayan site, which is set amidst tropical vegetation of the jungle, is included.
Merida was founded in 1542 by Francisco de Montejo y Leon on the site of the Mayan city of T’ho. The colonial heart of Merida is very appealing with good restaurants and plenty of nightlife.
A city tour and excursion to the Mayan pyramid of Uxmal are included.
Chichen Itza was built by the Maya in the late Classic period between 600 and 900 AD and is regarded as one of the new seven wonders of the world (Machu Picchu and Corcovado, the famous statue of Christ in Rio de Janeiro, are others from Latin America).
The main pyramid (El Castillo) dominates the complex which includes a number of temples, a ball court and the Plaza of a Thousand Columns, covering an area of 2.5 sq. miles.
You will visit the site on your way to the Riviera Maya.
